The Brown Cabinet - which job will Greenspan get?
Is it just me, or am I right in thinking that nobody is really analysing what Gordon Brown is saying about how he would run the country if he becomes prime minister? In his Andrew Marr interview last week, he gave a clear signal that he would appoint people from outside party politics to senior positions in Government. This can be a mixed blessing. It worked up to a point with Lord Young when Mrs T was in charge. Lord Sainsbury and Lord Drayson have been quite effective under Blair, but in relatively junior posts. Appointing a senior business type to a Cabinet job is fraught with difficulties. They would have to sit in the Lords, and their colleagues in the Commons, who have had to get elected to get their jobs, would not be that supportive. Nevertheless, I’m putting a bet down now that Alan Greenspan will become Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
