Party Funding

The resignation of Labour’s general secretary over the latest party funding scandal loses the last shred of credibility Labour has over this issue.  If they try now to limit pre-election spending in order to reduce the Conservatives’ ability to fight incumbent Labour MPs, it will be the greatest constitutional scandal of the last 100 years.  We will wait to see just how shameless they are.

  1. Labour are on the way out. Gordon Brown will be ousted - soon! Brown will be mocked for the rest of his political career. Who will replace Gordon Brown - Alan Johnson or David Miliband?

    Enough is enough.

  2. I’m amazed Labour support hasn’t fallen below 30% yet - what more does it take? It could only be a matter of time though…

  3. I will be furious if criminal charges aren’t IMMEDIATELY brought to Peter Watt, and any others involved. He has confessed and resigned. What more evidence is required?

As Gen Sec he is LEGALLY charged with complying with the Election laws. How can this gvt put forward any more laws if it doesn’t abide by those it puts in place itself?

Absolutely fizzing with anger. DON’T LET US DOWN - CALL FOR A PROSECUTION NOW.

  4. PS Dave, a poll now has Labour on 27%, Tories on 40%. No typos and this was conducted BEFORE the scandal broke.

  5. Sorry for the repeat poll figs; just seen Canvas’ comment 3 blogs ago.

On second thoughts, no, it WAS worth repeating :)

  6. Harriet Harman should be holding a press conference. She is the chairman of the Labour party - surely she knows who the big donors are? Yes? No? hhhmmmm. Weird. A ‘mystery’ or a ‘cover up’?

Labour should pay back the money - or give it to charity. The Tories should make sure they are vigilant about their ‘donations’ too.

  7. Things have rapidly moved on since the last comment. Now Harriet is in the frame, and while she didn’t get the usual ‘I have the utmost confidence…’ just before being sacked, neither did she get the full backing from El Gordo today.

How many more deputy PM contenders were bunged?

  8. Labour on 27% - that’s music to my ears. That’s lower than Michael Foot in 1983!

  9. Tomorrows PMQs will be interesting.

As DC says - Labour is on the rocks.

    Will Brown resign?

No, I doubt it. But it’s worth considering.

  10. ‘We will wait to see how shameless they are’

Why? I mean, what are the Tories waiting for, exactly? I know exactly how shameless this gvt is, so do you. This is as crooked as it gets.

For heavens sake, bring this gvt down, NOW. I’m guessing Baroness Jay knows a thing or two about that.

  11. Have you read this article? Wow.

What’s really going on in the Labour Party? Do you get the feeling that Labour won’t be able to cover up this story - unless of course they have another monumental crisis to deal with (which is entirely possible!)

  12. Do you think that Ed posting a handful of blogs in one go, is his way of not doing one-a-day? He’ll never get a mention on Iain Dale’s site if he carries on like this!!

  13. What’s the point of Gordon Brown?

Gordon - if you can’t cope, you should leave the work to someone who can.

    Please resign. Thank you.

  14. and take Darling Alistair with you :(

  15. oops, that smiley should be  not

  16. Read your Spectator link, Canvas. Yes, from what I hear, he’s spot on. There is much more to come out and it probably will. There is so much gossip buzzing around up here it’s difficult to know how much is accurate.

The Telegraph have put the following as their headline for Thursday’s editon:
Hunt for ‘mystery benefactor’ in Labour’s illegal donations scandal
implying they have an inkling that others may have been giving money to Mr Abrahams to pass on to Labour.

I am getting angrier by the day but, that Labour members thought that DC was out of order for questioning Brown’s ‘integrity’, is taking the mick.
